Dirt bike seat height chart - Seat height comparison table

Dirt bike seat height chart: Dirt bike seat height chart from adult size dirt bikes for heights of 182cm+ (6’+) down to kids size dirt bikes aged 3 to 4 years old. The seat height chart includes the height of the seat in centimetres and inches. Also included is a rough guide of engine size and cc for each seat height.

How to measure for seat height on a dirt bike and what size dirt bike do you need for your height

What size dirt bike do I need for my height? The best way to check the correct seat height for a dirt bike is for you to sit on one and test it. It’s the balls of your feet that should touch the ground, which must be the same for both feet with both heels off the ground. If either foot is flat on the ground or doesn’t touch the ground, it’s the wrong height bike.

How to know if your dirt bike seat height is wrong in detail:

  • When you sit on the dirt bike and you’re on the tips of your toes: Seat height is too high.
  • If you can’t touch the ground with both feet at the same time so the bike is leaned over: Seat height is too high.
  • If the bike falls over because you can’t touch the ground on either side: Seat height is way too high.
  • When both feet are flat on the ground and your heal isn’t in the air: Seat height is too low.
  • When both feet are flat to the ground and your knees are bent at the knee: Seat height is way too low.

Please keep in mind the recommendations in the above table are only a rough guide. Every dirt bike is different and everyone has different leg lengths to their overall height. Some have long legs and a short body, others have short legs and a long body and then there’s the average person too.

The best way to check if a dirt bike is the right height is to try it out. Also, when choosing the size of a dirt bike, always take account of your experience and capability of riding a dirt bike. For example, if you are tall but have never ridden a dirt bike before, don’t choose a dirt bike only based on seat height, otherwise you’ll end up with a dirt bike that’s way too powerful for you.

Don’t over-obsess about dirt bike seat height

Don’t get too obsessed with seat height. You can quite comfortably ride a dirt bike with a lower than optimal seat height. I’m 6’6″ tall so I always struggle to find the perfect height dirt bike, or road bike for that matter.

But I don’t suggest you ride a dirt bike where the seat height is such that you can’t touch the ground. Otherwise you’ll fall over every time you stop!

Correct dirt bike seat height for kids

If you’re buying a dirt bike for your kid, this is a little more tricky. This is because you want to make sure your child is safe, but also kids grow taller very quickly!

You may want to allow for growth when you buy dirt bikes for kids. So if you are able to buy a dirt bike which has an adjustable seat height, this would be the ideal choice. A dirt bike that allows for growth will mean you won’t have to replace their bike quite as often as they get taller.

But make sure that each time you buy your son or daughter a dirt bike that it’s the balls of both feet that touch the ground. That is, don’t buy a dirt bike where both their feet are flat on the floor, as they’ll already be too big for the bike.

How to change the height of a dirt bike seat

To change the seat height on a dirt bike, there are aftermarket lower seats available for most dirt bike models. Alternatively, you could shave the foam down on the seat or replace the foam with a thinner layer. But by changing the foam in this way will mean the seat is less comfortable.

In a similar way, you can raise the height of a dirt bike by replacing the foam with a thicker layer of foam.

Another option is to adjust the rear suspension on your dirt bike. However, be careful when doing this as you may compromise the ride.

Don’t go by engine size or cc of a dirt bike

Don’t think that if you choose a particular engine size or cc that you’ll be okay with seat height, as each manufacturer use different seat heights for the same powered bikes.

Here are some examples of a 125cc dirt bike:

  • Honda CRF125F – seat height is 78.5 (30.9″).
  • KTM 125 SX 2020 – seat height is 95cm (37.4″).
  • Yamaha YZ125 – seat height is 97.5cm (38.4).

You’ll see that even from this short list of 125cc dirt bikes, they all differ in seat height. So don’t get hooked on a particular brand of dirt bike, as you may need to choose the brand that has the right seat height vs engine power for your ability.
